Some interesting facts about songs in the musical South Pacific:
- “Some Enchanted Evening,” found in the first act of South Pacific, is sung by French plantation owner Emile de Becque. This song, rich in Oscar Hammerstein’s use of verbs, encourages Emile to capture his love for American navy nurse Nellie Forbush while the opportunity is present.
- “There is Nothing Like a Dame,” from Broadway’s first act of South Pacific, is a group piece sung by sailors in need of a little female company. Bands such as Reel Big Fish and British-born shows such as Morecambe and Wise Show and The Goodies have paid tribute to this comical song about having everything but the girl.
- “Bali Ha’I,” from the first act of South Pacific on Broadway, tells of Bloody Mary’s efforts to entice Lt. Joseph Cable, who is in love with Mary’s daughter Liat, to Bali Ha’I island. The fictional island, modeled after the island of Ambae located east of Northern Australia, is off limits to American service personnel. Oscar Hammerstein’s lyrics and Richard Roger’s score inspired South Pacific’s misty set design.
- “Happy Talk,” found in act two of South Pacific, declares the happiness Bloody Mary shares with Liat when Liat finds love in Lt. Joseph Cable. Another popular song in commercial music, The Damned’s Captain Sensible topped the pop charts with his rendition of this song.
- “This Nearly Was Mine,” the finale in the South Pacific musical, sung by Emile reveals the mental anguish of a love that couldn’t be. The Washington Post says that this particular version “raises goose bumps.” “This Nearly Was Mine” has been adapted by musical legends such as Frank Sinatra.
